WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)
The World wide web is part of the Internet. The Web consists of a huge
collection of documents stored on computers around the world.
The World Wide Web is also called the Web, WWW and W3.
Web Page
A Web page is a document on the Web. Web pages can include text,
pictures, sound and video.
Avoid Traffic Jams
Each Web site can only let a certain number of people connect at once.
If you are unable to connect to site, try connecting at another time. The best
time to connect is at night or on the weekend when fewer people are using the
Internet.
Web Site
A Web site is a collection of web pages maintained by a college,
university, government agency, company or individual.
URL
Each Web page has a unique address , called the Uniform Resource
Locator (URL). You can instantly display any web page if you know its URL.
HYPERTEXT
Web pages are hypertext documents. A hypertext document contains
highlighted text that connects to other pages on the web. You can easily jump
from one Web page to another by selecting the highlighted text.
Selecting highlighted text can take you to a page located on the same
computer or a computer across the city, country or world.
WEB BROWSER
A Web browser is a program that lets you view and explore information
on the web.
POPULAR BROWSERS
Netscape Navigator is currently the most popular browser. Other popular
browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer and NCSA Mosaic.

HOME PAGE
The Home page is the page that appears each time you start a web
browser.

Let’s say that you are sitting at your computer, surfing the web, and
you get a call from a friend who says, “I just read a great article”. So you
type that URL into your browser and press return.
At the most basic level possible, your browser formed a connection to a
Web server,, requested a page and received it.
Multimedia on the Web
A Web page can contain text, graphics, sound, video and animation.
A Web browser needs special programs, called plug-ins or helpers, to
work with certain types of files on the web.
These programs perform tasks that a browser cannot perform on its own.
Most plug-ins and helpers are available for free on the web.
GRAPHICS
You can view graphics such as album covers, pictures of celebrities and
famous painting on the web.

THUMBNAIL GRAPHICS
A thumbnail graphic is a small
version of a larger graphic that transfers quickly to your computer. If you

An imagemap is a graphic divided into sections, called hotspots. Each
hotspot contains a link to another page on the web. Selecting a hotspot will
take you to the linked page.
Text
You can view documents on the web such as newspapers, magazines, plays
,famous speeches and television show
transcripts.
Text transfer quickly to your computer so you do not have to wait long
to read text on a web page.
Inline Graphics
Most graphics on the web are inline graphics. Inline graphics can
include pictures, photographs, arrows
and buttons.
Sound
You can hear sound on the web such as TV theme songs, movie
soundtracks, sound effects and historical speeches.
You need a sound card and speakers to hear sound generated by a
computer. A sound card is a device you place inside a computer to play high
quality sound.
